We're Northern Light Fund Quiz winners!(Posted: 01-04-2010)

So, oop north to Manchester for us southern softies for the Northern Light Fund Quiz. A disparate bunch from 5 different companies, we went under the name “Beer and Bloating in Las Vegas”. Thanks to Mr Gibson, the strange workings of his mind and his knowledge of Hunter S Thompson for this. We duly adopted an “Americans on holiday” theme for our fancy dress. Worryingly it seems that Danny from Lunartics dresses like this on a day-to-day basis.

Virgin Trains whisked us northwards in slightly more comfort than I was expecting. The time passed very quickly as I was engrossed in watching a DVD of last summers Lions tour to South Africa. Once in Manchester, eschewing the comforts of the Lowry, I went for the more pocket-friendly Travelodge across the river (too close to the river I think, as the room had a distinctly damp feel about it).

It was great to see such a fantastic turn out for the evening – 33 teams – and many in fancy dress. One highlight was a member of a team dressed as school teachers getting caught using a mobile to get an answer and being led to the front for a spanking (not my scene, I must point out). For the rest of the evening the word CHEATS appeared next to their team name on the scoreboard!

Incredibly it turned out that we were all far cleverer than we looked, and despite the usual batch of ill-judged last-minute changes to our answers, we actually came first! Very proudly (and somewhat drunkenly) we trooped up to be presented with a shield and individual medals.

The train journey back next morning was a bit subdued.

We now have bragging rights for a little while, until we all undoubtedly say or do something stupid to knock us back down the pecking order.
